WHAT IS A GEOPARK?
A Geopark is an area developing geotourism in co-operation with the local communities. Geoparks are areas of outstanding geological importance, with vulnerable and sensitive landscapes. Geoparks exist to deepen public understanding of our planet, its natural and cultural heritage.

Kerry Geopark comprises an area bordered by Kenmare Bay, and extending inland to the mountains to the north of Tahilla, Sneem, Castlecove, Caherdaniel and Valentia Island.
Within this area is a myriad of geological and man-made features which combine to make the area just as attractive to the dedicated geologist as to the casual tourist who simply appreciates the beautiful landscape. Ten peaks of over 500m reach down to islands and sand and coral beaches via a series of rivers, valleys and lakes.
There are a multitude of rare and protected plants, animals and birds in the area. The almost frost-free climate creates a unique environment. The influence of humans on the landscape over the past 6000 years is everywhere to be seen, if you know where to look for it. Prehistoric copper mines, medieval holy wells, ring forts and mines are on our doorstep.
And don't forget that history starts yesterday. Our homes, churches, pubs, farms and roads all add to the cultural heritage of which we, the people of Tahilla, Sneem, Castlecove and Caherdaniel, are part. We are very lucky to be living in an area so rich in natural history. It is in all our interests to be aware of, to protect and promote our unique environment.
Did you know? ...
The mountains, lakes, valleys, rivers and beaches, combine with the panoramic views, the stunning skyscapes and wealth of plant and wildlife to create an experience which, up until now, has been largely ignored and undervalued. In short, we have something here that we are proud of and anxious to show off.
Kerry Geopark is grateful to Sneem, Castlecove and Caherdaniel IRD for the work they have done to establish the Geopark, and their continuing support and assistance, and the on-going support of local communities. With your help, it is our aim to bring this natural wonderland to the attention of the world.
